Review

Overall the season was a success, despite our suffering a number of cancellations due to the opposition being unable to get a team together.

There were 13 games scheduled at the Sports Club in Wingfield. Of these, 9 matches took place with one further Sunday being used for a single wicket competition when the opposition pulled out. This achieved our target of double figures for the number of fixtures per year.

The season opener was The Plough v The Queen’s Head – a good-natured event that The Plough won by 57 runs. Unfortunately it appears that The Plough peaked too early, as it was to be one of only two victories all season!

Some changes were made to the league this year; mostly minor in the way the points were allocated. However, we also expanded the league to four teams with the inclusion of the Dunstable Road Runners. They seemed to appreciate the spirit in which the league was created – so much so that they scheduled a friendly match against us immediately after the league match!

The winners of the league were The Carpenter’s Arms (Harlington) who are to be congratulated for a splendid performance by winning all of their matches. We look forward to exacting our revenge next season.

The club continues to thrive, with a number of large projects planned for the close season. The construction of the new nets is well under way, with three of the five concrete sections required for the base having been completed. We now await the return of some dry weather to allow us to finish the job. The surface will be comprised of coconut matting (supplied by a generous committee member’s employer) with a final layer of felt supplied by Flitwick Cricket Club (and yes, they do know!).

The other two projects are still in the planning stages, as both are extremely large. The first of these is the laying of an all-weather strip to form part of the square. This would allow many more games to be played, as poor weather would be less critical. In addition it would allow us to start the season earlier, making scheduling of games easier. We have received a grant for a large proportion of the cost but find that we need to make up the shortfall of around £3,500. A number of projects and fund-raising activities are being discussed and planned, although a generous benefactor would not go amiss! So if anybody knows of one please give them our telephone numbers!

The final project involves replacing the existing ‘pavilion’, which is becoming increasingly desperate. Our attempts to patch the roof continue, but in the long term replacement of the entire structure is the only sensible option. Obviously, this also requires major funding, and a grant application is the only way we can envisage it coming to fruition.

The committee will be hard at work during the winter months, planning next year’s activities and raising money for the club so please watch out for news of our forthcoming quiz night and other fun events.

Michael Wells, Vice Chairman.
