Chalgrave Sports Club – A Mid-Season Report
So far this season, things have been going well for the club, perhaps in terms of the field and pavilion rather than results.
We have put a great deal of effort into the development and maintenance of the field and cricket square – effort that has paid off handsomely. Two members in particular have done most of the work on the field and deserve a mention – Mike Wells and Paul Godfrey. We now have an outfield in excellent condition and a pitch with two prepared strips that have played in a manner the Lords groundsman would be proud of. Dave Worsley (ex Plough landlord) and I have been making some improvements to the pavilion itself – plumbing, general repairs, new doors and so on. A lot more work still needs to be done but we are getting there slowly.
Money is always hard to come by but we have been the grateful recipients of grants from the Parish Council and South Beds Council. This money will be put to good use to refurbish the roof of the pavilion, which is in a desperate state of disrepair. We will be holding a fund raising quiz night later in the year. These are always great fun – keep your eyes open for the publicity.
Recently, Nick Garnham, managing director of Lois Scaffolding Limited, was incredibly generous by donating and erecting a scaffolding frame and netting for our practise nets in one corner of the field. We offer him our sincere and grateful thanks. Perhaps, now we can practise, our results will improve.
We have been running a small pub league this season involving The Old Sun in Harlington, The Queen Victoria in Dunstable and our team, representing The Plough. So far the Old Sun team are looking likely candidates for the title, having beaten us twice. We have had one victory against The Queen Victoria by 31 runs and a second match had to be abandoned due to rain. We were hoping to involve a team from The Red Lion in Tilsworth but this idea was nipped in the bud when the pub was abruptly closed and sold as a private house!
